Another trip around the sun survived!

Today’s my birthday, and I’ll celebrate with a blog post!

I’ve been quiet lately. Part of it is just general negativity the last few years about many things. Some of it is disappointment in MMOs in general. Some of it is not really feeling like I have much to say that people are interested in.

But, let me go over a little bit of what’s happening in my life for those of you still reading.

The real endgame? Appearance.

I made a very good friend in FFXIV last month. She started playing the game with a few friends and happened to see my showy, yet simple, tank glamour. We started talking and she admitted she was a big fan of setting her appearance in MMOs. She was very fond of her WoW transmogs.

Since I’m a crafter, that meant I got a lot of new requests for crafting stuff. Which is fine, as I really like helping out my friends. But, it also got me thinking a bit about appearance systems in games. Let’s take a closer look, shall we?

The holidays, relationships, and MMOs

Like it or not, it’s now the holiday season. For most people, this is a glad time of year as we get together for feasts to drive away the winter darkness and chill. During this time our minds often turn to families and loved ones. We look for source of warmth to drive off the emotional chill we feel this time of year. Sometimes we find it, sometimes we don’t.

Often I like to take a closer look at things and evaluate them more in depth. Like relationships: How does our perceptions affect them, particularly in the online world? It seems that we fall into regular patterns in our relationships, conforming to society’s expectations of what we should do. But, the culture in the U.S. has a terrible time really defining relationships. Even a meaningful word “love” tend to be dangerously overloaded and fraught with peril. Let’s take a look at this, and maybe think about what it means for Socializers in games.

I just keep getting older

Once again I have survived a full revolution clinging to a ball of dirt and molten metal hurtling through space around a continuous nuclear fusion engine. As with most things, this makes my life sound much more dramatic than it really is. For the non-science nerds out there: it’s my birthday today.

But, as is tradition on my blog, let’s take a look at the past year or so of life.

Slow to post

After a great Blaugust, I’ve been a bit slack about posting regularly. A few things are contributing to this.

Let’s do a brief catch-up, shall we?

In defense of multiple servers

This is a special blog post done in conjunction with the MMOBro for the end of Blaugust 2016. We had a pleasant email discussion on a variety of topics, and we decided to do a point/counter-point type post on an MMO topic.

I’m going to write about how multiple servers are generally better for MMOs than single, monolithic servers. MMOBro will attempt to advocate for the single server games. Read both blogs, then join in the conversation!

Busy for a bit

A confluence of things is keeping me extra busy lately. So, here’s a catch-up post with what’s going on in my life, and why posting might be slow or abbreviated for a bit.

Pictures from Final Fantasy XIV

I don’t take a lot of screenshots of games. Well, not the type of screenshots meant to be shared on a blog. I’ll take reference sceenshots for game development work, but that’s not the game thing.

One of the MMOs I’m playing the most right now is Final Fantasy XVI. I have managed to take a few screenshots of the game, and as an end-of-the-year special post, I figured I’d post some of them.

Seasonal events and tone

As we get into fall, we start getting into the “holiday season”. The first major one is coming up: my birthday. Although, the day before is also Halloween, so maybe that takes precedence.

MMOs tend to have special events around these times to celebrate the season. Let’s take a look at the current Halloween events in the two MMOs I play and see how tone is affected by these events.

In business, it’s all about the growth

Blaugust, day 18

Today, I’ll write about one of the topics I’m most interested in: business. Specifically, how business impacts the development of games. I could sum it up in one word, “Growth”, but where is the fun in that?
