Know your MMO history

A few months ago there was a great post over on Massively about the Visual History of MMORPGs.

You may be surprised to learn that Meridian 59 wasn’t the first MMORPG ever.

Or, probably not. The article is actually well-researched. There’s enough data in each entry to give you an idea of what the game was like, but it really demands that a good game developer go do more research. But, this article may give a more casual user some information that they didn’t have before.

I hope there’s a part II in the future. Perhaps even some articles that go into more depth about the older games.

  1. Whilst googleing the name of my very first MMO I came across your Blog. It is great to see it still active Psycho! I played M59 from beta to 3DO’s cancellation of the game. My home server was 104. It’s been many years since I’ve gotten curious about M59. I read some of the articles that you posted and found them very interesting. Quite the trip of nostalgia. After Meridian I wend to DAoC and now WoW and LoTRO. It seems that everything since M59 has gone to a level based system. I remember having the hardest time going from M59 to DAoC. Now, I really seem to appreciate the simplicity of not having to be so stressed out about stats, spell schools, and losing my stuff when i Die. I do miss the small community of the M59 servers though. It was nice to be able to get on, broadcast a HELLO HELLO and get an answer back. :)
