Parting thoughts on another Blaugust

Another August has come and gone, and I’ve filled a month with posts and didn’t miss a day by my reckoning! So it was a successful Blaugust… in that regard. It was quite the month, and I figured I’d give my thoughts about how things went.

Let’s see if there’s a reason for me to keep posting on the blog!

While it was fun to dust off the blog and post in a flurry, I’m left with the feeling that it’s just not the same.

Low motivation

It had been a while since I posted anything on here. Most of my time and effort has gone into working on the streaming podcast with my friend Maulgrim. A lot of what I used to put into blog posts I pour into a discussion format while playing games. So a bit of the wind was taken from my blogging sails and diverted into this.

I think there’s also just the feeling of repeating myself. This month’s posts echoed the posts from last year, where I talked about the topics of RP for a bit. Sometimes just talking about something feels like it gets stale because nothing really changes. I don’t have the funds nor the influence to make a RP-focused game or change a game to be more RP-friendly. All talking and no doing is a bit frustrating; many other developers have stopped writing for this reason as well.

One thing that didn’t help this month was that I fell ill for most of the month. A sore throat and a cough for one week followed up by a cough, congestion, and fatigue the next. A bit of recovery afterward and it added up to a lot of feeling tired and not at my best. I kept going despite this, and made a post every day.

But I felt like sometimes the posts weren’t my best work. I often went with a first draft rather than doing as much editing as I’d like. There was a bit less research and cross-linking as I usually liked to do on this blog. While I did a post every day, I’m not sure it was of the usual quality I like to have. That’s fine, the point of Blaugust is to post every day to show you can do it!

I also noticed a few problems with the auto-poster to Twitter. Didn’t help I forgot the #Blaugust2019 tag the first few weeks, and the system seemed to post late. I run a very old version of the plugin that still has the old character limits! But I wasn’t quite in the mood to struggle to update the plugin to fix whatever problems I had; the illness took a lot out of me, as I said.

Few comments

But one problem is that there were so few comments. I’ve said many times before I don’t post to hear my own stuff, I post to read the comments. Blogs are a conversation, and I enjoy the back and forth. When I post on Google+ there was at least he opportunity to get some comments there, even if I had to transcribe some over to the blog. But the dearth of comments here was a bit disheartening.

I’m not sure if it’s just blogging is not cool. Maybe the content wasn’t great? Maybe RP just doesn’t register with the people who read my blog. Maybe I ignored the blog for too long and lost what few readers I had. Maybe my posting times were too late for people to notice on Twitter.

I was also just too tired to go participate. I don’t read blogs much anymore, and so I’m not posting much. I also didn’t really post much on the Blaugust Discord about my content.. again, my illness really didn’t leave me with much energy than to make posts. Perhaps I could have done more to get more attention.

Is it time to retire?

That’s the question, isn’t it? Is it worth trying to build the blog back up? Should I just focus on the streaming podcast? Or do people just not really care anymore about the things I want to talk about?

Your thoughts, as always, are appreciated.

  1. I would focus on the podcast. The blog doesn’t benefit from forced daily articles. You should return once you feel like it or stay with the podcast or streaming entirely. Best wishes, hope to see you perhaps on a future social network that doesn’t suck or get shut down! :) MMO-wise, we live in shitty times, unfortunately. Looter shooter stuff seems to take over. The strawfire WoW Classic is still burning bright, let’s see for how long. Let’s see what Amazon comes up with for their “New World” game. As Colin Johanson from GW2 fame or infamy seems to have joined the team I don’t have high hopes. For now I am playing Elite, No Man’s Sky and Ubisoft open world games, mostly solo though. Kindle Unlimited is fantastic, never read so many scifi and fantasy novels before. Best wishes for the future.

  2. I read every post but I really have nothing to contribute to a discussion on RP. I never did much of it and I haven’t done any for years and have no interest in starting. That’s why I didn’t comment much. About carrying on, I’d say the same as I say to everyone – you should blog because you enjoy it. Unless you are actually doing it for money there is no other reason.

Also, most people have blogs in their rss feed or a blog roll. Those update automatically. You can post every day, every week, every month, sometimes, never. It makes no difference. When you feel the utge, pop a post up and everyone will know and most will be happy to see it and to read it. I have bloggers on my roll who haven’t posted for months or even years but and it’s always a thrill to see one of them light up again.

@Longasc – The way I see it, the MMO scene hasn’t been this lively or vibrant for several years. It feels like we are on the cusp of major change. Also the general quality of MMOs is higher than it has been for quite a while. That’s how it feels to me.

On the other hand, Kindle Unlimited is a total waste of time and money. I took the three month free offer, could barely find a anything worth glancing at (and I spent hours searching). There’s a small numbeer of comics/graphic novels worth a look and a smattering of novels – maybe a couple of dozen. Almost no major publishers will touch it with two bargepoles tied together so it’s 99% self-published stuff that Amazon facilitates and no-one has tme to shovel through that for the one or two half-decent offerings that might be buried in the depths. I cancelled after less than a month just to be absolutely sure they didn’t get any money from me and I haven’t touched it since.

Amazon Prime, though, is great value!

I value your comment and think the discussions are the best part of this blog. However, there's this scourge called comment spam, so I choose to moderate comments rather than giving filthy spammers any advantage.

If this is your first comment, it will be held for moderation and therefore will not show up immediately. I will approve your comment when I can, usually within a day. Comments should eventually be approved if not spam. If your comment doesn't show up and it wasn't spam, send me an email as the spam catchers might have caught it by accident.
