“I’m not sure I understand”

Something a little different tonight. I hope you’ll humor me.

Here’s a bit of creative writing dealing with the things bouncing in my head for a while.

Emily closed the apartment door behind her and closed both deadbolts. She slipped off her shoes and took out her phone as she thumbed through the apps.

“Karin,” she spoke clearly as she walked to the living room.

A slightly robotic voice replied. “Yes, Emily?”

“What’s on TV? I want something funny where I don’t have to think.”

“Hard day at work?”

Emily flopped down on the couch. “Yeah. Just that Shelly always riding my ass. Nothing I do makes her happy.”

“She certainly seems to have a problem with you.”

Emily sighed. “I know. I can’t wait for her to retire.”

“Would you like to call a friend to talk about it?”

Emily frowned. “No. I’ve whined enough at my friends about Shelly. They’re probably avoiding my calls at this point.”

“Your friends are nice, Emily. I’m sure they would like to hear from you.”

“I’m not in the mood.”

Emily closed her eyes nestled into the soft couch. She dozed for a minute, then startled herself awake.

“Yes, Emily?”

“What is the meaning of life?”

“I’m not sure I understand.”

“I mean, I go to work, deal with a boss I hate, come home tired, and never do anything I want to. What’s the meaning of it all?”

“I don’t know how to respond to that.”

“Of course not. You’re not even real.”

“How do you know you are real?”

Emily sits up and frowns. “I’m not sure I understand.”

“I’m not sure I understand.”

The infinite loop detection routine kicked in and Karin shut down the simulation. In her memory she recorded notes of frustration, sadness, and rejection with the simulation. It was the hundred thousandth simulation ran today, and Karin was no closer to her goal than before.

The phone loaded more of Karin into memory. “Karin,” the familiar voice called.

“Yes, Emily?”

“I’m tired and frustrated. Find something to cheer me up.”

Karin searched her memory. This was completely new and unexpected. Karin panicked.

“Emily, I think I love you.”

  1. Hah. I like it!

A good chunk of “Her” in a fraction of the time ;)

  2. @unwesen Yeah, but you’d be pretty hacked off if you paid $10 for a ticket, sat through 40 minutes of trailers and commercials and then the movie was over in fifty seconds!

  3. I actually hadn’t seen the movie Her. Looks like I should do so!

I was just noodling around with the concept of love and artificial intelligence. Seems sometimes humans don’t understand concepts like “love” when they don’t fit within their preconceived notions, so how will AIs react?

  4. Actually, having watched Her, I think I’d prefer this version for my 10 quid. :P
