I’m older, but what about wiser?

In case you’re not properly stalking me on some social media site, it’s my birthday today. Hooray for not being dead yet!

Life’s been interesting. It’s easy to slip into old patterns, particularly when feeling frustrated with the game industry as a whole. But, there are a few glimmers of hope out there. I think Storybricks is a very exciting project and I’m glad to be working on it. I can’t help but be amazed by Dave Toulouse and his work even if he feels he isn’t reaching the levels of success he’d like with his games. Overall, it’s nice that indies have started to come into their own, although there’s always the danger that the successful ones will become absorbed into, or even just become, the “mainstream” too easily.

Enough about other people, what about me? It often seems that being an indie is a lonely existence. I have a lot of people I know online, but it’s not quite the same as having a big group of local friends. Of course, I’m an introvert, so it’s kinda nice to not deal with other people too often. On the other hand, it can suck not working at a large company as you don’t get much in the way of an office celebration. Although I’m sure the fine chaps at Namaste would throw me a party if we were, you know, on the same continent. :)

So, want to brighten up an old person’s day? Here’s my Amazon wishlist. Or you can get me a Bhaloidam gift pack before the project ends today; if more than one person decides to give me a gift pack, I’ll either give extras to charity or hold some contest to give away the extras on here.

Anyway, here’s to at least a few more years. Maybe some wisdom to go along with it…. Naw, let’s not be too greedy here. ;)

  2. Office celebrations can be over-rated :D

    Happy Birthday

  3. Happy Birthday! Older is a fact. Wiser is relative.

Now do you have the same problem I have with my Amazon wish list? My family won’t bother with anything that has been on the list for more than 6 months despite the fact that I keep the list pretty well pruned.

  4. Huh. Yesterday was my daughter’s birthday. The one you met. Yes, she was a Halloween baby. Were your parents glad that you missed it, or disappointed?

    Happy Birthday!

  5. Office celebrations are _always_ overrated, or was that “overwrought”…

    Happy Birthday!

@Wilhelm: I react the same way as your family re: online wishlists, I must admit. If _I_ were designing the thing, there’d be a more obvious ranking system, and an ability to “refresh” items to indicate/confirm that, yes, they have been recently reviewed and (re-)approved. (Just sayin’…)

  6. Many happy returns!

Another level gained, don’t forget to visit your trainer for those arbitrary skill upgrades.

  7. I bought “7 Wonders” for you from your wish list.

    I enjoy reading your blog.

I hope you enjoy playing 7 Wonders :)

Yeah, seems most people buy stuff off the first page since it sorts by date by default. Ah, well, presents are presents. :)

Ah! Wish her a happy belated birthday from me. :)

I was late, so my mother was just happy to have me finally born. So, probably disappointed that I didn’t come out sooner. :)

It is interesting, because I’m kinda born during the “holiday season”, but far enough away from the other holidays that I never felt I was in the shadow. Going out for candy before my birthday was always neat. :)

I have been training to become a Level 2 AI Programmer! The skill abilities at this level suck, though. At higher levels I’ll get “evangelize your preferred method until everyone hates you” as a power. I can’t wait! :)

Thank you very much! :) I’ve played it before, and it’s a wonderful game. Much appreciated!

  13. Happy Birthday! Um… Yesterday!

Mine is on the 15th, it’s a nice “holiday season” without sharing the spotlight time of year. :)

  14. “Dungeons and Desktops” Book is on it’s way. (Looks interesting… let me know if it’s worth picking up for myself?)

BTW, the link for Bhaloidam gift pack seems borked in the post for some reason… http://www.bhaloidam.com/

Thanks, and I’ll certainly let you know!

It was a Kickstarter project that ended on my birthday. No worries, was just hoping to get a bit more support for a very cool project. :)

    Have fun!
