Weekend Design Challenge: Looking at smelly feats

When last we did a weekend design challenge… oh, has it really been three months? Yeah, I slacked a bit here. To be fair, I’ve been busy. :)

But, let’s get back on the horse and take a look at our “coverting D&D 3rd edition to classless” project, shall we?

Interview with Royal O’Brien

Sometimes technology is often an unsung hero in game development. The visual art or game design often tends to get a lot of coverage because it’s easier to show screenshots or talk about gameplay than to really show off tech.

BitRaider provides an interesting bit of tech that allows you to start playing a game before it has all been downloaded. It’s a pretty neat bit of tech, something that many game developers have discussed over the years. I interviewed Royal O’Brien, the co-founder of BitRaider, to get his perspective on the technological and business sides of the game industry.

To choose or not to choose

A common game design mantra comes from Sid Meier, “A good game is a series of interesting choices.” Most designers hold this up as holy writ, saying that a game must give choices to the player in order to be considered a game.

But is this really the case? Can you have a game where you don’t have to make choices and still have fun?
