Player perceptions about your game

There is often a divide between perception and reality, especially in online games. For individuals, perception is reality. The way players perceive your game will be reality to them, despite whatever models you have that demonstrate that the player’s perceptions are wrong. People don’t like to hear that they are wrong even in the best of times, and when they feel your system just screwed over their enjoyment, they’re going to be even less impressed.

I want to take a look at some reasons why I think that player perceptions vary so much with reality.

Interesting Mechanics: Multi-role classes
Filed under: — Psychochild @ 3:56 AM

The multi-role (aka “hybrid”) class is often looked at as an aberration in MMOs. One character able to fill multiple roles has the problem of being properly balanced against other classes. Make a hybrid class too strong and specialists feel left out. Make the hybrid class too weak and the hybrids feel like they have no place in the game. Trying to balance things properly is very difficult for an average designer to do.

Let’s take a look at some hybrid class designs and how they have worked out in games.

Makin’ it easy

There’s a lot of discussion about how easy games should be. On one hand, an easy game makes people feel powerful, and allows a wider variety of people to play the game to completion. On the other hand, a harder game challenges the player and can engage them more. So, what is the correct answer?

As usual, one size does not fit all.

Happy birthday to the blog, too!

This month is also the birthday of this blog. About five years ago I decided to start writing a blog.

And here we are today, celebrating a milestone on a site for people who can pay attention for longer than 140 characters. (I wrote the rest for the 3 of you that fit this criteria. ;)

LFM: Charitable Donations quest!

The holiday season is often seen as a time for giving. (Or, for some, a time to grind out some achievements to get a special flying mount. Those people are weird.) A few of us MMO bloggers decided to get together and encourage our readers to make some charitable donations to worthy causes.

Read on if you want to know what a bunch of MMO developers think are good causes to support. No, it won’t be a Cheetos and Mountain Dew fund for us. :P

Happy Birthday to me

I turn 36 today. I can no longer pretend that I’m going to be eternally young, I feel middle age sneaking into my room and sitting in the corner.

Or, as someone much younger (23) commented to me in IM, “You’re going to die soon!”

If you’re feeling overly generous, my Amazon wish list linked on the right side. Or, here’s a link for you people reading via RSS. (Ha! No excuse now!)

A few other thoughts after the jump.
