What is crunch?

Crunch time is a big issue in the industry. It was one of first things I blogged about.

Surprisingly, nearly five years later, we still have crunch time. Okay, maybe not to the same degree in this case. :)

“It’s easy”

One of my biggest pet peeves as a game designer and programmer is a simple two word phrase: “It’s easy.” It’s not simply the words, of course, but the sentiment behind them. It’s a dismissal of the hard work it takes to accomplish many tasks.

The rule of thumb is that whenever someone utters those words and then doesn’t personally go do the thing he or she was talking about, it often means that person is full of crap.

What is missing in our games?

Sometimes I wonder if MMOs have really lived up to their potential. From my first steps playing a text MUD and realizing that some of those other characters were controlled by people like me, these games captured my imagination. The fun diversion became a deep fascination with multiplayer gameplay and game mechanics and eventually a career. But, when I take a look at where we are now, I can’t help but think that something is missing from our games.
