Brainstorming puzzles in dungeons

In a recent project I participated in, the goal was to clone some of the old style RPGs in mazes, with Dungeon Master being the main example.

One bit of work I started and that others added to, as to make a list of puzzle types in these types of games. Since the project has stalled, I figured I’d post the list here for others. Full list after the jump.

Interesting Mechanics: Exploration rewards

I tend to mention Meridian 59 mostly in passing on here. But, in the current installment of the Interesting Mechanics series, I want to point out one of the better mechanics in M59: the mana nodes. This fits into a larger design pattern I like to call exploration-based rewards.

A reliably volunteer project

I’ve professed a belief that independent game development is more likely to produce a breakthrough than large, corporate development. The bulk of my career has been focused on independent development, allowing me to develop the skills necessary to do something special in online games.

The drawbacks are numerous, of course. The primary one being that money doesn’t grow on trees. That means you have to be extra creative to get a game going because you can’t just write big checks like a large company can. Often, this means using like-minded volunteers.

Unfortunately, my experience has been that volunteers are not very reliable. Why is that?

The loss of another good friend

I had to put my cat Morpheus to sleep today. He was suffering from a whole host of health complications, unfortunately. So, if I’m a bit slow to respond to emails the next few days you’ll know.
