Why do you waste your time here?

The latest big issue to be discussed on blogs is how much game designer blogs suck.

Now, admittedly, I like to think of this as a “game development” blog instead of “game design”, but I’ll pretend to be thin-skinned enough to take Cuppycake’s words to heart and be very offended that she told me I sucked. But, instead of crying into my beer, I’ll offer up some justification about why you should bother reading my self-indulgent blathering.

The role of random

I recently got back from IMGDC and had a great time. Since I was traveling, it was a good excuse to bring along my Nintendo DS and play Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, a game I got for Christmas last year. One interesting thing is that the citizens in town give you “quests”, like in MMOs.

And that’s where it got frustrating. The drops you require are randomly dropped. Ick!

This made me want to post something about the nature of randomness in games.

The passing of Dave Arneson

I was shocked to learn yesterday that Dave Arneson had passed away. I was shocked for three reasons: First, it is the death of someone I admire. Second, when someone passes away who created something I grew up with, it gives you that, “Oh, crap, I’m getting old!” feeling.

Finally, it shocked me it took so long to find out. When Gary Gygax passed away, lots of people posted about it and it was all over the blogosphere. But, then again, Dave was the less showy of the two from all the stories I’ve heard.

Interesting Mechanics: Non-mana resources

I want to do some analysis of interesting game mechanics. I think often developers don’t really look at game mechanics to really understand them; often it’s, “Hey, that’s cool, let’s copy it!”

For this installment, I want to look at non-mana resources for characters.
