Lies, damned lies, and E3 presentations

Let me say it up front: game developers and publishers lie. I know it’s hard to believe, but sometimes people aren’t always the most truthful. It’s interesting to note that I’m not the only one saying this.

As a developer who tries to be honest, it gets very frustrating to have to play on an uneven field. Why? Because gamers seem to fall for the same lines every time. It seems everyone involved with gaming refuses to learn from the past.

That “pink” conference

I had the opportunity to talk to Sanya Thomas at E3. She’s infamously known as “Tweety” back in the olden days of the internet, back when we used passenger pigeons to carry bitstreams between computers. Anyway.

We had an excellent chat about the Women’s Game Conference in Austin and what it means. I thought the discussion was interesting, so I thought I would share the highlights, with Sanya’s permission.

Note that I’m paraphrasing the conversation.

Entertainment media and the mass market

I got into a discussion with some other people on Greg Costikyan’s blog where he talks about young turks vs. old farts. I had mentioned my usual bit about the problems with the industry, how the young turks are tired of the status quo and want something different; however, the industry works directly against them.

Below is part of my reply to someone in the comments of this entry, plus more thoughts on the topic.

Why customer service doesn’t matter

Scott Jennings posted a link and discussion about CS in online games. Being the assho… er, vigorous discussion enthusiast I am, I decided to be contrarian.

That’s right, you heard me: CS in online games doesn’t matter as much as people say it does. I encourage you to read my whole post before you fly into uncontrollable rage, though.

Speaking at the Games, Learning & Society Conference
Filed under: — Psychochild @ 1:59 AM

I will be speaking at the Games, Learning & Society Conference, which is June 23-24, 2005 in Madison, Wisconsin.

This conference may wax a bit academic for most of the kind readers of this blog, but I think it sounds like a very cool conference. I’m going to give a talk on the Death of Games, talking about many of the same topics covered here: the dominance of large companies, the problems of being indie, the dangers of ignoring the history of the industry and how we’re allowing that history to be forgotten. Should be a real soul-crusher! :)

The RPG of Heaven

The computer’s not fixed yet, but I’ve decided to try to get back into the swing of things. So, with my laptop on and my Mozilla spellchecker plugin installed, here I am.

I just saw the movie Kingdom of Heaven in the theater yesterday. A great movie with an interesting story. My thoughts turned to games, as they often do, and I wondered what it would take to effectively tell the same type of story in a computer game.

See, I’m one of those hopeless cases that thinks that perhaps we could still tell interesting stories in games. Yeah, there truly is no hope for me.

Fair Warning: I do give a few spoilers about Kingdom of Heaven, which I feel are very minor. But, if you are sensitive to this type of information, go watch the movie then come back and read this informative and interesting post. :)

Off to E3

I’m off to E3 next week. If you want to reach me, send an email to and we can potentially meet up. I’m particularly intersted in talking to anyone intersted in international opportunities for Meridian 59 and the new client.

Still waiting to get my new system up and running….
