Book Review: A Good Old-Fashioned Future

I just finished reading A Good Old-Fashioned Future by Bruce Sterling. It’s a collection of short stories set in the near future. I thought I’d give a little book review. Warning: this will be a little long. ;)

It’s Thanksgiving, and there’s plenty to be thankful for.

Me? I’m thankful for (in no particular order):

  • My better half
  • Friends
  • Family
  • Good food
  • My career
  • Meridian 59

That’s the top few at least. :) I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.

Birthing observations for online RPGs

Launching an online RPG is a wonderful and frightening experience. It takes a lot of work to get one up. And, even after the launch, then the real work starts. But, there seems to be a cycle of events that happens every time, and I thought it might be interesting to post some observations about this predictable cycle.

We’re lucky if we get the one step forward…
Filed under: — Psychochild @ 10:34 PM

Richard Bartle, a respected developer of the original text MUD, recently wrote an article talking about why online games are doomed. In essence, most players think only in the short term when these games require long-term thinking.

A bit of vacation

I’m heading out to visit family for a week over Thanksgiving. We’re gonna visit Kat’s family in Montana and eastern Washington state. This probably means we’ll stay home for Christmas, though. We’re leaving early on Sunday, November 21st and coming back late on Friday, November 26th. I hope to have email access during that time and will respond (slowly) to emails as I can.

More about crunch time

The IGDA has an open letter, dated November 16th, that talks how “Quality of Life Issues are Holding Back the Game Industry”.

Yet another interesting perspective about what’s already been circulating lately. Is this really addressing the issues? Is real change in the air? We’ll have to see.

The importance of being Indie

This is one of those topics I find myself posting about often. What is the role of the independent (indie) developer, especially when it comes to developing online games?

Warning, this is a long one….

Bad Meridian 59 advertising

Meridian 59 has had some truly terrible advertising in the past. 3DO obviously didn’t know how to advertise a game like Meridian 59.

For your viewing displeasure, I present 3 different ads that 3DO ran to promote Meridian 59. I’ll warn you: these are real ads, they are not spoofs. Click and weep, my friends.

These links will open in new windows.
“Next time someone tells you to get a life, tell them you’ve got one. Meridian 59. Online.” (Note the abuse of the term “next generation” here!)
“Engage in thousands of exciting relationships with total strangers without wearing anything made of latex.” (No, I’m not kidding.)
“Tell war stories with other daring explorers!” (Notice that 3DO didn’t have the domain for that URL?)

Sometimes no advertising is better than bad advertising, I think.

Crunchy game development

The issue of crunch time has been circulating on the web lately. It’s cumulated with Electronic Arts getting into trouble for their crunch time requirements.

My first reaction was, of course, “Why did 3DO have to go bankrupt before now?!?” No gravy train for me, I guess.
