In defense of multiple servers

This is a special blog post done in conjunction with the MMOBro for the end of Blaugust 2016. We had a pleasant email discussion on a variety of topics, and we decided to do a point/counter-point type post on an MMO topic.

I’m going to write about how multiple servers are generally better for MMOs than single, monolithic servers. MMOBro will attempt to advocate for the single server games. Read both blogs, then join in the conversation!

How to sunset a game

What does it take to sunset a game? This went from academic MMO exercise a decade ago to pressing issue for today’s mobile games with a strong online component in an increasingly overcrowded market where games don’t necessarily last that long.

So, how do you gracefully close down a game during what is a time fraught with emotional loss for the players?

I wrote some new DLC for March of the Living

My good friend Dave “Over00″ Toulouse released some new DLC for his game March of the Living. What you may not know is that I was the writer and narrative designer for the DLC. Dave provided a basic idea, and I fleshed out the story and wrote the content for it.

I’ll go into a bit more detail, but definitely go check out “The Three of Us”.

Negativity and its effect on indie developers

Let me tell you a story about my good friend Dave. He’s a smart guy and an indie game developer. He’s stuck with game development for many years. He finally had a success big enough that he’s working on making games full time.

Dave wants to work on a new game. He’s trying a lot of things. He’s trying some 3D this time instead of going with 2D as he has before. He’s working on some AI-driven stuff, instead of heavily scripted and content-heavy games before.

Dave showed the game to some fellow indie developers. But, you know what he found? Negativity.

And negativity doesn’t help.

MMOs are everywhere, they’re just not called MMOs

One thing that has struck me lately is how MMOs are everywhere. The trick is that people don’t call them “MMOs” anymore. MMOs have silently slipped into other games, some even very popular. But perhaps we have a hard time recognizing anything that isn’t a Diku clone.

Let’s take a look at where MMOs have gone to now that the spotlight is off of the traditional MMORPGs. You might be surprised where MMOs are popping up these days.

Questions about types of games

A few questions for you to ponder. I’ll post my answer later as to not pollute answers:

When I say “types” of games, I mean setting, gameplay, whatever you want. I’m mostly interested in PC and/or mobile gaming, but you can include consoles if you want.

1. What would you say is your favorite type (or top 3 favorite types) of games?

2. What types of games do you wish they would make more of right now?

3. What types of games do you think they make too many of right now?

Steam sale goodies

So, the Steam summer sale has come and gone. As I sit in limbo, waiting to hear back from various opportunities, I bought a few games that were on serious discounts. My wish list got a little lighter, but my backlog got a bit heavier.

The newbie tabletop gaming experience

The new player experience is something that gets a lot of attention in computer gaming, particularly in MMO gaming. Recently, I’ve been initiating a fellow gamer into the deeper mysteries of a tabletop RPGs and have been helping her to create a character. Along the way, I’ve been taking a look at what it takes to get someone into tabletop gaming. And, by extension, how to apply these lessons to other games in the future.

Always look on the bright side of MMOs

Okay, so yesterday I went a little dark and pessimistic. Or, as Richard Bartle calls it, “A normal Tuesday night.”

Today, though, I want to look on the bright side and respond to Timothy Lochner’s suggestion:
“What do you believe is an untapped “thing” for the MMO space that could actually be viable?”
